Motorcycle Safety Gear — Lights, Locks & More

Beyond helmets and jackets, there is an entire category of add-on safety accessories that can dramatically improve your visibility, protect your bike from theft, and give you real-time data about your ride. Here are the ones worth investing in.

Disc Brake Locks

A disc brake lock is the most practical anti-theft device for everyday use. It clamps onto your brake disc rotor, physically preventing the wheel from spinning. Thieves cannot ride or roll your bike away without first removing it.

Models with built-in motion-sensing alarms (typically 110dB) add a loud deterrent. If someone touches or moves your bike, the alarm goes off immediately. Most quality options on AliExpress are made from hardened steel and are virtually pick-proof.

Safety reminder: Always use a bright reminder cable between the lock and your handlebar. Riding away with a disc lock still attached can cause a serious crash.

LED Visibility Lights

Being seen by other drivers is one of the most important things you can do for your safety. LED light strips mounted on your motorcycle frame, wheels, or under the tank increase your visibility from every angle, day and night.

Amber and white LEDs are the most useful for practical visibility. Many kits are flexible, waterproof, and come with adhesive backing for easy installation. Some include Bluetooth or remote-controlled color-changing modes for style, but solid amber side-lights are the real safety upgrade.

LED turn signal strips are another great addition — they mount on the fork tubes or mirrors and provide a wider, brighter signal than stock bulbs. Many riders report that cars give them noticeably more space after adding auxiliary LEDs.

Helmet-Mounted Safety Lights

A helmet light is a rear-facing LED that attaches to the back of your helmet, making you visible to drivers behind you at the highest possible point. This is especially effective in traffic, where your motorcycle's tail light may be hidden behind cars.

Some advanced models feature brake-sensing technology — they detect deceleration and flash brighter, just like your bike's brake light. This gives drivers behind you an extra warning when you are slowing down.

Most helmet lights attach via adhesive, clip, or magnetic mount and are USB rechargeable. A single charge typically lasts 4–8 hours depending on brightness and flash pattern.

Engine Guards & Crash Bars

Crash bars (also called engine guards or highway bars) are metal frames that bolt to your motorcycle's frame, creating a protective cage around the engine and lower bodywork. In a low-speed drop or tip-over, the crash bars absorb the impact instead of your engine, fairings, or foot pegs.

They are especially important for heavier bikes, adventure motorcycles, and new riders who are still building their low-speed handling confidence. AliExpress offers model-specific crash bars for most popular bikes at a fraction of dealer pricing.

Many crash bars also serve as mounting points for auxiliary lights, highway pegs, or tool bags, adding functionality alongside protection.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Riding on underinflated tires is dangerous — it affects handling, increases braking distance, and can lead to blowouts at speed. A motorcycle TPMS gives you real-time pressure and temperature readings for both tires, displayed on a small handlebar-mounted screen or via a phone app.

External TPMS sensors screw onto your valve stems and wirelessly transmit data. They are easy to install, move between bikes, and many models have audible alerts when pressure drops below a safe threshold.

Why it matters: Studies show that improper tire pressure is a contributing factor in a significant percentage of motorcycle accidents. For under $20, a TPMS eliminates this risk entirely.

Prioritize Your Safety

You do not need to buy everything at once. If you are building your safety setup gradually, here is a suggested priority order:

1

Disc lock with alarm — protects your investment every time you park

2

Helmet light — the single biggest visibility upgrade for under $10

3

TPMS — real-time tire data prevents dangerous situations

4

LED visibility lights — be seen from every angle, day and night

5

Crash bars — essential if you ride a heavy or expensive bike
